Journal Prompt: how do I keep moving forward
What keeps me moving forward is having a commitment and/or a project. One of my strengths is commitment. If I say I will do something it is done. My word is important to me. So, if I tell you I will help, I do. But please, don’t fool around. That drives me crazy if I am there to do a job. This was a bit of a side note!!
This commitment thing works for me during National Novel Writing (NaNoNo) month in November. I commit to writing 50,000 words that month. I tell friends I will have less time and focus on writing. Also a deadline helps. So one of the things I do that keeps me moving forward is commiting to something.
I am breaking my year down in quarters and having a top five for the quarter. 3-5 projects I focus on. Everything else is paused until the quarter ends. I reevaluate at the end of the quarter and see what is not completed or a new project I want to focus on. The three months work for me as I don’t feel I’m giving up something I enjoy. I’m just pausing it to finish another project. Instead of spreading myself to thin.
Deadlines and projects keep me moving forward. I enjoy having a project to work on. It gives me focus. A deadline works as I don’t scatter myself. The other thing that keeps me moving forward is rituals. Once they are in place I feel more in control. One ritual I have is placing a glass of water on my nightstand before I go to bed. I drink it first thing before I do anything else (except turn off the alarm). It starts my day feeling I have done something healthy for me. Moving forward.
Commiting to acts that keep me healthy makes me feel I’m moving forward. To be someone to moves every day. Who journals on a regular basis. That creates regularly. Having routines that give me joy, peace, and accountabilty. That feels like I’m moving forward. I’m giving myself permission to create the life I want.
Nothing is a large sweeping action. They are small commitments. Following through on projects, having a deadline, having a healthy ritual. Nothing earth shattering but they do keep me moving forward.
What small items do you do that keep you moving forward? What could you do or put in place to move forward? Remember they don’t have to be huge gestures. A glass of water on the bedside table.
